A final builders clean is the last step before a new home, unit or renovation is handed over. Its job is to remove the dust and residue that construction leaves on every surface, so the owner or buyer walks into something that looks finished. Here is what it usually covers, and what it does not.

Where it fits in a project

Builders cleaning is often done in stages:

  1. Rough clean after the main trades, to clear dust and debris so the finishing trades can work.
  2. Final clean before the practical completion inspection or handover.
  3. Touch-up just before handover, if trades or defects work have been back since the final clean.

Booking the final clean too early is the most common mistake: any trade that comes back afterwards brings dust with them.

What a final clean covers

Dust, everywhere

Construction dust settles on and inside everything:

  • cupboards, drawers and shelves, inside and out
  • benchtops, splashbacks and appliance fronts
  • light switches, power points and fittings
  • skirting boards, door frames and doors

Glass, frames and tracks

Windows, frames and tracks within reach, including sliding door tracks where grit collects.

Stickers and light residue

Manufacturer stickers and protective film on fittings and glass, and light residue that comes off with the right method.

Kitchens and bathrooms

Sinks, tapware, vanities, shower screens and tiles cleaned to handover standard.

Floors

Vacuumed and mopped, with attention to edges and corners where dust gathers.

What it does not cover

  • Rubbish and building waste removal — that sits with the builder’s waste arrangements.
  • Paint, render or cement beyond light residue — heavy removal risks damaging the surface and belongs with the relevant trade.
  • Work at heights that needs scaffolds, harnesses or elevated platforms.

If any of these are needed, say so when you ask for a quote so they can be planned properly.

What helps the clean go well

  • A clear handover date and the date the last trade leaves.
  • Site access and induction requirements, so the team can start on time.
  • Power and water on site.
  • For several units, a list of units and the order they will be ready.
