A mattress steam clean happens in your home. It is a clean of the mattress surface — it lifts dust, marks and odours from the part you sleep on — rather than a repair or a pest treatment. Here is what happens, how to get ready and what to expect afterwards.

Before the visit

  • Strip the bed. Remove sheets, the mattress protector, toppers and pillows, and put them through the wash while the mattress is being cleaned.
  • Clear around the bed so the mattress can be reached from the sides and foot, and turned if it is designed to be.
  • Note the marks you want looked at, and what caused them if you know.
  • Check the care label or the maker’s care instructions, and mention the type of mattress — innerspring, memory foam, latex or pillow-top — when you book.
  • Plan for drying time. A morning or early-afternoon visit gives the mattress the most time to dry before bed. If several beds are being done, have a spare place to sleep in mind.
  • Keep pets out of the room during the visit and until the mattress is dry.

What happens during the clean

  1. A thorough vacuum. The mattress is vacuumed to lift dust and loose debris — on both sides where the mattress can be turned. Many single-sided and pillow-top mattresses are not designed to be flipped; for those, the vacuum covers what can be reached.
  2. Pre-treatment of marks. Marked areas are pre-treated to loosen what is in the fabric.
  3. Steam extraction of the sleeping surface. The machine rinses the surface and draws the moisture, and the loosened soil, straight back out. The aim is to clean the cover and surface without soaking the mattress.

What it can help with

A mattress collects dust, body oils, spills and everyday odours over time, even under a protector. A steam clean is aimed at exactly that: lifting dust, freshening the sleeping surface and treating marks. It is often booked when a spare bed is being made ready for guests or new occupants, at the end of a lease, or alongside carpet cleaning.

What it cannot fix

Being clear about the limits avoids disappointment:

  • Old or set-in stains. Some marks have been there too long, or have changed the colour of the fabric, and cleaning cannot lift them. They may lighten, or not change at all. What carpet stains professional cleaning can help with explains why age and earlier treatments matter so much.
  • Pests. Pest treatment is not part of a mattress clean. If you think there are bed bugs or other pests, speak to a pest control professional before booking any cleaning, and tell us.
  • Sagging, lumps or broken springs. Cleaning does not change how a mattress supports you. If it is worn out, it is worn out.
  • Health concerns. A steam clean is a cleaning service. It is not a treatment for allergies or any other health condition.

Drying and making the bed

Allow several hours with good ventilation before making the bed. Drying depends on the room, the weather and the mattress, so it can take longer on a cold, damp day.

To help it along:

  • Open windows if the weather allows, and leave the bedroom door open so air can move through.
  • Run a fan, heating or air conditioning.
  • Leave the mattress uncovered — no sheets, protector or blankets.
  • Put the protector and sheets back only once the surface feels dry to the touch.

Keeping it clean afterwards

  • Use a washable mattress protector and wash it with the sheets.
  • Air the mattress for a little while when you change the bed.
  • Deal with spills quickly. Blot with a clean white cloth or paper towel; do not rub, and do not pour water or cleaning products onto the mattress.
  • Follow the maker’s instructions on turning or rotating it.

Price and booking

Mattresses are quoted per mattress. As a guide, our calculator lists a mattress added to an end of lease clean at $96 plus GST. Tell us how many mattresses there are, their sizes and anything you want us to focus on.

Carpet, rug and sofa cleaning can be done in the same visit. If you are booking a sofa as well, what to know before booking sofa steam cleaning covers the care label check. For carpets, room prices start at $79 + GST for one room.
