Moving out goes smoothly when each job happens in the right order: the clean cannot start until the furniture has gone, carpets need drying time, and the keys cannot go back until the clean is done. This seven-day plan works backwards from the day you hand back the keys.
Seven days before: book and plan
- Confirm your key handover date and the time of the exit inspection, if you know it.
- Book the cleaner for the day after the removalists, with time to spare before the handover.
- Decide whether carpets need cleaning — carpet cleaning when moving out in Victoria explains when it is required.
- Book hard rubbish collection if you have items to get rid of.
- Apartment? Book the lift and loading bay for moving day.
Five days before: declutter and pack
- Pack everything you will not need this week.
- Sell, donate or dispose of what you are not taking.
- Use up food in the fridge and freezer.
- Find your copy of the entry condition report and any photos from moving in.
Three days before: small jobs
- Remove picture hooks or adhesive hooks only if your agreement allows it and you know how to do it without damage — otherwise ask the agent.
- Report any repairs in writing. Repairs are separate from cleaning.
- Clear the garden, balcony and any storage cage.
- Agree with your agent how the bond will be finalised.
Two days before: moving day
- Removalists take everything.
- Check every cupboard, drawer and the meter box for items left behind.
- Take rubbish to the bins or the hard rubbish pile.
- Leave power and water on.
One day before: the clean
- Carpet cleaning first, if booked, then the general clean — or both in the same visit.
- Let the cleaner in, or leave keys as arranged and share entry details privately.
- Open windows afterwards to help carpets dry.
Handover day
- Walk through every room with the entry condition report.
- Take dated photos of each room.
- Return all keys, fobs and remotes, and get a receipt or written confirmation.
- Before signing a bond claim form, check it shows the amount you will receive.
If your dates are tight
When the move and the handover are on the same day, book the clean straight after the removalists and skip carpet cleaning only if the carpet does not need it. A compressed day is possible, but there is no margin if something takes longer — two days is much easier.
