Apartments add a layer of logistics to moving out: shared lifts, loading bays, visitor parking, building managers and fobs. None of it is difficult, but leaving it to the last day is how a clean ends up starting late. Here is what to sort out before the cleaner arrives.
Empty the apartment first
End of lease cleans are priced and planned for an empty home. Furniture, boxes and bags left behind block floors, cupboards and skirting boards, and anything left in a cupboard means that cupboard cannot be cleaned inside. Plan for the removalists to finish before the clean starts, not during it.
Check the building’s rules
Many apartment buildings have rules for moving days. Check with the building manager or owners corporation:
- Lift bookings. Some buildings require a booking and lift protection for removals.
- Loading bay times. Docks may be shared and booked in time slots.
- Hours. Some buildings restrict noisy work or removals to certain hours.
The cleaner usually needs the lift too — for equipment, and for carpet cleaning hoses or machines if you have booked carpets.
Parking
City and inner-suburb apartments often have no free parking nearby. Tell your cleaner what is available:
- a visitor space or loading bay they can use,
- permit parking, and whether a visitor permit is available,
- metered street parking only.
If only paid parking is available, our calculator adds a parking line so the cost is visible before you book.
Keys, fobs and access
- Who lets the cleaner in: you, the agent, the building manager or a lock box.
- Fobs for the front door, lift and car park, if needed.
- Where keys go afterwards: back to you, to the agent, or into a lock box.
Share entry codes and lock-box details privately. We keep access details in a restricted part of our system and never send them by email.
Power, water and hot water
Keep all three on until the clean is finished. Ovens, vacuums, carpet machines and proper rinsing all need them.
Balconies and storage cages
Balconies are easy to forget: they collect leaves, dust and cobwebs. Clear any pot plants and furniture. If your apartment has a storage cage or car space, empty it too — and tell the cleaner if you want it swept.
Rubbish
Apartment bins fill up quickly on moving day. Check where hard rubbish can go and book a collection if you need one; cleaners cannot remove belongings or rubbish.
