An end of lease clean is planned for an empty property, and the things that hold that up are usually the ones waiting for a collection: a couch, a stack of moving boxes, a pile of garden cuttings. Carnegie is in the City of Glen Eira, and the council’s booked collections run to a weekly pattern. Plan the move around that pattern and the property can be clear when the cleaner arrives.

This is a guide to timing, not legal advice. Council services change, so check the Glen Eira pages listed with this guide before you book.

Find your three local dates

  1. Your bin day. Hard rubbish is collected on your street’s bin day, though the council says some items may be collected the following day. Glen Eira’s “Near me” tool finds it from your address.
  2. Tuesday is bulk cardboard day, according to the council’s page. Boxes go out on Monday night.
  3. Wednesday is bundled branch day. Branches go out on Tuesday night.

A collection that falls on a public holiday is moved, so check the council’s page in a holiday week. Add your key handover date and you have the frame for the whole move.

If moving day falls after the collection you need, book the collection for the following week, or plan another way to clear the items before the clean. Items waiting on the nature strip do not stop a clean; furniture left inside means the floor under it may not be cleaned.

Getting hard rubbish right the first time

Glen Eira only collects what meets its rules, so check before you carry anything out:

  • Nature strip only. Items on a driveway or private property are not collected.
  • Size. Single items can be no longer or taller than two metres.
  • No bags. Loose items only — nothing in plastic or garbage bags.
  • Prepare appliances. Remove batteries; take the doors off white goods or tape them shut.
  • Not accepted: batteries and items with built-in batteries, gas bottles, chemicals, paint or oil, building waste, MDF, pallets, polystyrene, asbestos, and general household or garden waste.

Boxes and branches

Moving boxes add up fast. For the cardboard collection, flatten them and tie them into bundles with strong string.

If your agreement makes you responsible for the garden, prune a week or so before you leave. Branch bundles must be tied with strong string — not pantyhose, plastic or wire — and can be up to two metres long and 30 centimetres thick, with a maximum of 20 bundles. Branches thicker than 15 centimetres are not taken, and loose green waste goes in your green bin. Garden work is not part of an end of lease clean, so finish it before the cleaner arrives.

When council collections are not enough

  • Items council will not take. Glen Eira lists transfer stations in Notting Hill and Camberwell. Both take batteries, e-waste and paint free, and charge for some other items.
  • Used your bookings already? If you have used this financial year’s free collections, one alternative is a skip bin. On your own driveway it needs no council permit; on the road or nature strip it needs one, which you can usually arrange through the skip company when you order.

Carpets and the inspection

Book carpet cleaning after the furniture has gone, so the whole floor can be reached, and leave drying time before the inspection — how long carpet takes to dry explains what affects it. Whether you must have carpets professionally cleaned is covered in carpet cleaning when moving out in Victoria.

Moving out of an apartment block rather than a house? Moving out of a Caulfield apartment covers owners corporation rules, parking permits and fobs, and applies across Glen Eira. For the week itself, see the seven-day moving-out timeline.
