After hot water extraction, carpet is damp rather than wet — most of the water is pulled back out by the machine. How long the rest takes to dry depends on the room as much as the cleaning. Usually it is a few hours; on a cold, still, humid day it can be longer.

Here is what makes the difference, and what you can do to help.

What decides drying time

Airflow

Moving air carries moisture away. A room with open windows or a fan running dries far faster than a closed room, even on the same day.

Temperature and humidity

Warm, dry air takes up moisture quickly. Melbourne’s weather swings a lot: a dry summer afternoon and a damp winter morning give very different drying times for exactly the same carpet.

The carpet itself

Thick, dense pile holds more moisture than a short, tight loop. Wool and synthetic fibres also behave differently. The backing and underlay matter too — which is one reason cleaners keep water use to what the carpet needs.

How much cleaning it needed

Heavily soiled areas and spots that needed extra treatment get more attention, so they can take a little longer than the rest of the room.

How to help it dry faster

  • Open windows on opposite sides of the home to get air moving, if the weather allows.
  • Run heating or air conditioning. Both dry the air. A ceiling or pedestal fan helps as well.
  • Keep doors open between rooms so air can circulate.
  • Avoid closing the room up straight after cleaning.

Walking on it and putting furniture back

  • Walk on it as little as possible until it feels dry. If you have to, use clean socks or clean, dry shoes — bare feet leave oils and dirty soles leave marks.
  • Wait until the carpet is dry before moving furniture back. Timber and metal legs can leave marks on damp carpet; foil or plastic squares under the legs help if something must go back sooner.
  • Keep pets off until it has dried.

If you are moving out

Leave drying time in your plan. Book the carpet cleaning after the furniture is out and allow time before the key handover and the exit inspection. Carpet cleaning when moving out in Victoria explains when professional cleaning is required and how to time it.
