Vacuuming and carpet steam cleaning are not competing options. They do different jobs, and a carpet that is looked after well usually gets both: regular vacuuming, and a deeper clean every so often.
What vacuuming does
A vacuum lifts dry material from the surface and the upper part of the pile: dust, crumbs, hair, grit and fluff. Done often, it stops grit working down into the fibres, where it rubs against them as people walk across the carpet.
What it does not do is remove anything stuck to the fibres. Oils from feet and shoes, sticky spills and the grey film that builds up in walkways are held on by grease and residue, and air flow alone cannot shift them.
What steam cleaning does
“Steam cleaning” is the everyday name for hot water extraction. The process has three parts:
- Pre-treatment of walkways and marks with a cleaning solution to loosen oily soil.
- Hot water rinsing into the pile under pressure.
- Extraction: the machine pulls the water — and the loosened dirt — straight back out.
Because it rinses and extracts, it reaches the soil that vacuuming leaves behind, which is why traffic lanes usually look lighter afterwards.
Side by side
| Vacuuming | Steam cleaning (hot water extraction) | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes | Loose dust, hair, grit, crumbs | Oily soil, residue, many spills and marks |
| How often | Weekly or more | Occasionally, or when needed |
| Who does it | You | Usually a professional with extraction equipment |
| Drying | None | Usually a few hours |
When steam cleaning is worth booking
- Walkways look grey or dull even right after vacuuming.
- There are spills or marks a vacuum and spot-cleaning have not shifted.
- Pets live in the home and hair and odour have built up.
- You are moving out and the carpet needs to be returned to its starting condition — see carpet cleaning when moving out in Victoria.
- Before an event or a sale, when you want the room to present well.
What to expect
Most everyday marks lift with pre-treatment and extraction. Stains from dye, bleach or burns change the colour of the fibre and cannot be removed by cleaning. Carpet is damp afterwards and usually dries within a few hours — how long carpet takes to dry explains what helps.
Our carpet steam cleaning is priced per room — $79 + GST for one room — and you can price your rooms in the instant quote.
