A little preparation before the cleaner arrives means more of the carpet can be reached, the visit runs on time and the carpet dries sooner. Here is what to do.

The day before

  • Clear small items off the floor — shoes, toys, baskets, cables, plants, bins and anything under beds.
  • Move fragile and valuable things out of the rooms being cleaned.
  • Move light furniture you can lift safely, such as side tables and chairs, into another room.
  • Note the stains you want looked at. A small piece of tape next to each one helps, along with what caused it if you know.
  • Check how many rooms you booked. If a lounge and dining area are one open space, mention it — a large open-plan area may count as more than one room.
  • Vacuum if you can. It lifts loose dirt and hair so the clean can focus on what is in the pile.

On the day

  • Parking close to the entrance, as the equipment has to be carried in.
  • Access to every room being cleaned, and to power and water if the equipment needs them.
  • Pets in a separate room, the yard or with a friend for the visit and until the carpet is dry.
  • Children away from the work area and the equipment.
  • Windows open if the weather allows, to start the drying.

Large furniture

Beds, wardrobes, entertainment units and full bookcases are usually cleaned around rather than moved, because moving them can damage the furniture, the carpet or the walls. If you want under a large item cleaned, move it yourself beforehand or ask when you book.

Stains: what to expect

Most everyday marks lift with pre-treatment and extraction. Some stains — dye, bleach or burns — change the fibre itself, so cleaning cannot remove them. Pointing them out at the start means you know what to expect before the work begins.

Avoid trying strong products on a stain in the days before the clean. Some household cleaners leave residue or set the stain, which makes it harder to treat.

After the clean

Keep the room aired, walk on it as little as possible and wait until it is dry before putting furniture back. How long carpet takes to dry covers what speeds it up.
