There is no single answer that suits every home. A carpet in a spare bedroom and a carpet in a hallway that sees children, a dog and outdoor shoes every day soil at very different rates. What carpet makers do give is a starting point — and from there, the way your home is used decides whether you need a professional clean sooner.
What carpet makers recommend
The people who make the carpet are the best guide to looking after it. Three Australian manufacturer care guides, listed under Sources, say this about professional cleaning:
| Care guide | Professional cleaning |
|---|---|
| Godfrey Hirst, wool carpets | Hot water extraction every 12 to 18 months, depending on use |
| Victoria Carpets, ECONYL nylon carpets | Hot water extraction at least once every 12 to 18 months |
| Victoria Carpets, wool carpets | Steam cleaning at least once every two years |
So for most homes the makers’ range is roughly every 12 to 24 months, with heavier use pointing to the shorter end. The guides name professional hot water extraction — what most people call steam cleaning — as the method, and two of them say do-it-yourself steam cleaning and shampooing are not recommended.
None of them treats professional cleaning as a substitute for everyday care. The Victoria Carpets wool guide asks for vacuuming at least weekly, and more often in busy areas.
Your own carpet’s guide comes first
If you still have the care guide or warranty papers for your carpet, use the interval it gives — it was written for that product. Warranties can also set out maintenance conditions: the Godfrey Hirst booklet, for example, asks owners to maintain the carpet with regular vacuuming and cleaning. Keeping the paperwork and your cleaning receipts together makes any later question simpler.
What makes carpet need cleaning sooner
The makers’ ranges assume ordinary household use. These push you towards the shorter end, or beyond it:
- Pets. Hair, oils from coats and paws, and the occasional accident build up faster than in a home without animals.
- Young children. More time spent on the floor, and more spills.
- Shoes worn inside. Grit and oily soil from paths and roads are carried straight into the pile.
- Busy walkways. Entries, hallways and the route from the back door to the kitchen soil long before the corners of a room.
- Light colours. The same amount of soil shows sooner on a pale carpet.
- A full house. More people simply means more foot traffic.
A quiet room used by one or two adults who take their shoes off at the door is likely to sit at the longer end of the range. A family room with pets may need the shorter end, or a clean of the walkways in between.
Signs it is due now
Whatever the calendar says, these are good reasons to book:
- Walkways look grey or flat even straight after vacuuming.
- There are spills or marks that blotting and vacuuming have not shifted.
- A stale smell lingers in the room after it has been aired.
- You are moving out, getting a home ready for sale, or preparing a room for guests or new occupants.
What happens if you leave it longer
Soil that stays in the pile does more than look dull. Grit works down into the fibres and rubs against them every time someone walks across, and the oily film in walkways holds on to more dirt. Regular cleaning will not make an old carpet new or undo wear that has already happened, but stopping soil from building up is part of looking after it.
Marks are also easier to treat while they are fresh. A spill that has dried and been walked over for months can be much harder to lift, and may only lighten.
Does more often mean better?
Not on its own. Professional cleaning works alongside vacuuming; it does not replace it. Between cleans, the makers’ guides put the weight on vacuuming regularly and dealing with spills straight away. Carpet steam cleaning vs vacuuming explains what each one removes.
Planning cleans room by room
Because our carpet steam cleaning is priced per room, you do not have to clean the whole house on the same timetable. You can book the hallway and living area when they need it and leave the quiet bedrooms for their turn. As a guide, one room is $79 + GST and three rooms are $229 + GST.
A few practical points:
- Pick a dry, mild day if you can. Carpet is damp after cleaning and usually dries within a few hours, faster with good airflow.
- Add other items to the same visit. Sofas, chairs and mattresses can be done at the same time, which saves arranging a second visit.
- Note the date. A reminder in your calendar for 12 months later is an easy way to keep track, then decide whether the rooms actually need it.
Renting or moving out?
The end of a lease is a separate question. Whether professional carpet cleaning is needed when you move out depends on the rules for your agreement and the carpet’s condition, not on how long it has been since the last clean — carpet cleaning when moving out in Victoria explains it.
