Ask two cleaners to clean the same home and one may take twice as long as the other — usually because one is doing a regular clean and the other a deep clean. Both are useful, but they do different jobs. A regular clean keeps on top of the dirt that arrives every week; a deep clean deals with what builds up slowly in the places a regular clean does not reach.

This guide is about homes you live in. Moving out of a rental is a different job again — see end of lease cleaning vs regular house cleaning.

What a regular clean covers

A regular clean looks after the parts of the home that are used and get dirty every day: kitchen benches, the sink, cooktop and appliance fronts; bathrooms and toilets; dusting of reachable surfaces; and vacuuming and mopping the floors. Because it repeats, dirt never has long to settle, and each visit stays fairly quick.

What it does not do is open things up. The inside of the oven and fridge, the slats of the blinds and the glass of the windows are left alone unless you ask for them.

What builds up out of sight

These are the areas that build up slowly, and the ones a deep clean usually targets:

  • Inside the oven — baked-on grease on the racks, trays and door glass.
  • Inside the fridge — shelves, drawers and the seals around the door.
  • Interior windows and sills — fingerprints, dust and marks on the glass.
  • Blinds — dust settles on every slat.
  • The laundry — lint, detergent drips and dust around the tub and the machines.
  • Balconies and garages — leaves, grime and dust that get walked inside.
  • Build-up on everyday surfaces — grease on the rangehood, soap scum on the shower screen and grime in grout lines that a quick wipe no longer shifts.

Signs your home needs a deep clean

  • It has not been professionally cleaned for a while, and you are about to start regular visits.
  • A wipe no longer shifts the grease on the cooktop or rangehood.
  • The shower screen stays cloudy and the grout looks darker than it should.
  • You can see dust on blinds, sills and the tops of door frames.
  • Guests are coming, or the season is changing and you want a fresh start.

How often to deep clean

There is no fixed rule. It depends on how often regular visits happen and how the home is used. A practical approach is one deep clean to start, then regular visits to maintain it. Rather than repeating a full deep clean often, add individual jobs when they are due — the oven more often if you cook a lot, blinds and windows when the dust starts to show, the fridge when it needs clearing out anyway.

Combining the two

  1. Start with a deep clean so regular visits begin from a clean base instead of spending their time catching up.
  2. Choose a regular schedule that suits the household — weekly vs fortnightly house cleaning helps you decide.
  3. Add the deep jobs to regular visits as they come due, one or two at a time.
  4. Treat carpets separately. Vacuuming at every visit handles surface dirt, but it is not the same as a deep carpet clean — see carpet steam cleaning vs vacuuming.

Neither a regular nor a deep house clean includes washing and ironing clothes, outside windows above ground level, or moving heavy furniture.

Pricing a deep clean

On our regular and deep home cleaning service, deep work is added to a home clean in the calculator rather than booked as a separate service. A one-off clean starts at $319 + GST for a one-bedroom apartment and $579 + GST for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house.

From there you can add a deep clean and individual extras — inside the oven, inside the fridge, interior windows, blinds, a balcony sweep and mop, a garage sweep or a laundry detail — so you pay only for what the home needs. A condition setting lets the price reflect heavier build-up, and if a few areas matter most, say so in the notes and we confirm what is included. The instant quote shows every line, plus GST, before you send anything.
